Once upon a time, I was a member of a book club. Mind you, I'm not very fond of book clubs, mostly because I don't like reading deadlines, and I don't like it when people pick my books for me, and, well, I just don't like books clubs. Nonetheless, I was part of the Poteet High School Book Club, run by the librarians of the school, and I managed to discover a few good books, and one fantastic author, that I'm sure you've all heard of: Gabrielle Zevin. When I was a Senior, I read Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, a book that has really stuck with me for the last three years. So, I was walking through the bookstore (which I rarely visit because I never have money for books), and I happened to see Gabrielle Zevin's new book, All These Things I've Done. And it sounds sooooo good! I won't lie, I've had Elsewhere sitting on my shelf for about two years, but I'm definitely going to read it this year, and I'm also going to add her new novel to my collection. Here's a little blurb so you can add it to your wishlist too!
In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty. And yet, for Anya Balanchine, the sixteen-year-old daughter of the city's most notorious (and dead) crime boss, life is fairly routine. It consists of going to school, taking care of her siblings and her dying grandmother, trying to avoid falling in love with the new assistant D.A.'s son, and avoiding her loser ex-boyfriend. That is until her ex is accidently poisoned by the chocolate her family manufactures and the police think she's to blame. Suddenly, Anya finds herself thrust unwillingly into the spotlight—at school, in the news, and most importantly, within her mafia family.
