About my Blog

There is nothing better in life than sitting down to write, with some music playing in the background, and maybe a bowl of ice cream in your lap. I'm only 21, but I know what I want in life, and that's to write. This blog is the story of my journey to publication. I know I'll get there some day.

Thoughtful Thursday-- Couples Writing Together

So, I've been writing novels for about seven years now. I've written 10 young adult novels and am currently writing my first adult novel. I've been around the block a few times, and I know a lot of writers, including my wonderful mother and sister. However, when The BF came to me about writing, I was a little surprised. Not too surprised, because he had mentioned to me in the past that he liked to write short stories, but when he came to me and asked, "How would you feel if I told you I wanted to get published?" I wasn't entirely sure what to say.

I definitely don't have a problem with it. I actually really enjoy lying in bed with him, both of us writing on our computers and talking about our plots. It's always fun to have someone around that you can share things like that with, and I'm certainly not a competitive person. Now, I'm not going to lie, if he got published before I did, I would be a little bitter, only because I've been working toward publication for the last four years, but I would certainly be happy for him.

Besides, no one in my family even writes in the same genre, really, that I do. I write Mainstream Young Adult fiction, whereas my sister writes under the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre, and my mother writes religious fiction. The BF wants to write Middle Grade fiction, which is an area I doubt I'll ever touch. So, there's really not a problem here. We wouldn't be in competition in any way.

It's always nice to have something you can share with your significant other, but I know that having the same career can be hard on some couples. What do you think?

xoxo,
Vicky B.

My wife's a published writer before me. But she's a technical writer for her company, so there's no bad blood there. It's great to share writing with each other.

I personally would love the sharing stories aspect of it (especially because it's often hard to find someone who understands your vision and has the same passion for writing as you do), but I'm not gonna lie, I would secretly get ticked if he got published before me, LOL! xD Since you don't have a competitive personality, though, it sounds like you could make it work! :)
